As always, so many unique nooks and crannies in your photos. Beautiful library. I especially appreciated your reflection on the kinds of conversations teachers and students may have had in that one room school house. I like to think there were progressive teachers then as now who challenged their students to think inclusively—perhaps by reading books like Caddie Woodlawn to them in 1935 when it was published (in support of the indigenous people in the nearby Wisconsin woods).
I just LOVE these...thank you so much. I attended one room schools in SE Pennsylvania from second through sixth grades.... Two grades with one teacher. Potbellied stoves. Hand pump in the yard and privies separately for boys and girls. Feels like Little House on the Prairie to me now... I am 80...!
Vermont still has an operating one room school house in Elmore. I hope it survives the current educational overhaul!! They are a treasure for so many reasons.

I love how the Vermont libraries double up as galleries to showcase the incredible quilts made by very talented locals.
I’ve started a third column of “yes/no” codes for each library: taxidermy? Christmas cactus? Quilt? It’s hard to find a no-no-no library in Vermont.
